ABOUT MIKE ABRACZINSKAS
Mike Abraczinskas is currently the Director of the North Carolina Division of Air Quality (DAQ).  Mike has 22 years of experience in air quality (over 20.5 with DAQ). Mike has been the Director of DAQ since March 2017.  He graduated from North Carolina State University; is certified as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT); and is a graduate of the North Carolina Public Managers Program.

Mike is currently serving in leadership positions of several regional organizations comprised of State/Local Air Quality Agencies:

  • Past Chairman for the Southeastern States Air Resource Managers (SESARM)
  • Chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Air Management Association (MARAMA)
  • Board member of the Carolinas Air Pollution Control Association (CAPCA)

ABOUT MICHAEL PJETRAJ
Michael Pjetraj is the Deputy Director for the Division of Air Quality.  He has been with the DAQ since 1995 and has worked in the Raleigh Regional Office and the Central Office as an environmental engineer.  He also served as the Stationary Source Compliance Branch Supervisor in the Central Office for eight years.  Prior to joining the DAQ, he worked for a source testing / consulting company.  Michael earned an engineering degree from North Carolina State University.  He is a licensed professional engineer in North Carolina and is also a North Carolina Certified Public Manager. ABOUT SUSHMA MASEMORE
Sushma Masemore is currently serving as the Deputy Assistant Secretary and State Energy Director for the Department of Environmental Quality, where she is working to bring clean energy solutions and sustainable practices to businesses, citizens, and government operations.  Sushma is leading the implementation of Governor Cooper’s Executive Order on climate change and clean energy economy, bringing climate change mitigation, adaptation, and resiliency practices to state government.  Sushma also oversees energy programs related to weatherization assistance, state energy planning, and reducing state building energy consumption.

Sushma has 28 years of public and private sector experience bringing innovative technology solutions to control air pollution, solid waste and water pollution.  Sushma has managed distributed energy generation projects in commercial and industrial settings which examined the economics, power production performance, and environmental impacts.  In state government, she managed teams of engineers and scientists to develop air quality regulations, state implementation plans, and emissions analysis tools.  Sushma can be reached at sushma.masemore@ncdenr.gov or (919) 707-8700.

Marcia Allocco is the DEACS’s Environmental Assistance Section Chief with oversight of their permitting and small business assistance staff, the Environmental Stewardship Initiative (ESI), and DEQ’s Customer Service Line.  Prior to DEACS she started her DEQ career with the Division of Water Resources as a NPDES regulatory specialist in the Mooresville regional office and spent the prior 14 years performing regulatory compliance oversight at Brookhaven National Laboratory owned by the U.S. Dept. of Energy.  She has a B.S. in Chemistry a M.S. in Environmental Management.  Marcia can be reached at marcia.allocco@ncdenr.gov or 919-707-8206.

ABOUT ANGELA BARGER
Angela Barger is the manager of the N.C. DEQ Environmental Stewardship Initiative. She has over 20 years of experience working for N.C. DEQ; most recently with the Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service (DEACS).  Prior to working with DEACS she worked with N.C. ABOUT BRADLEY McLAMB
Bradley McLamb is a Meteorologist in the Attainment Planning Branch of the North Carolina Division of Air Quality (DAQ). Bradley has been with DAQ for over 7 years, where his primary job duties include air quality forecasting and web app development. Prior to working at DAQ, Bradley worked at the North Carolina State Climate Office for 5 years and also served one year as a SCEP intern with the National Weather Service – Raleigh. He holds a B.S. in Meteorology and a M.S. in Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences from North Carolina State University. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Davida, and two boys Noah (6) and Elias (4), long range forecasting (especially for winter storms and hurricanes) and watching movies in his home theater. ABOUT HEATHER WYLIE
Heather Wylie is a meteorologist in the Attainment Planning Branch of the North Carolina Division of Air Quality (DAQ). She just entered her second year with the division, and her primary job duties include preparing the daily air quality forecast for the state and assisting with other meteorology-related needs. Prior to joining the NCDAQ, Heather worked at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality as an air quality forecaster/air pollution monitor data validator. She also has experience working in environmental consulting as an air dispersion modeler, and previously worked at Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center as a meteorological data specialist for spaceflight launches. Greg Reeves has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno.  He has had a variety of industry experience before coming the DAQ including three years with Anaconda Copper as Process Engineer and Mining Engineer in an open-pit copper mining operation, 17 years with Cargill Incorporated in evaporated salt production facilities in Kansas and southern Louisiana in roles ranging from process engineer through plant manager, and four years with Cargill Incorporated in vegetable oil processing facility in North Carolina as Refinery Superintendent. Kurt Tidd is a 1991 graduate from the University of Maine at Orono with a BS in Civil Engineering and a 1985 graduate from Eastern Maine Community College with an AS in Environmental Engineering. He currently is working for DAQ in the Washington Regional Office as an Environmental Engineer.  He came to the DAQ family in 2018 from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, where he worked for 23 years.  While at the Maine DEP, he served as the Section Chief for the Compliance and Enforcement Section of the Division of Licensing and Compliance in the Bureau of Air Quality. Handout 2 - NC Department of Environmental Quality's Environmental Stewardship Initiative (ESI)

ESI promotes and encourages superior environmental performance in North Carolina. This voluntary program is available at no cost. ESI seeks to reduce the impact on the environment beyond measures required by any permit or rule, producing a better environment, conserving natural resources and resulting in long-term economic benefits. As part of the ESI program, DEACS staff provide technical assistance and advise on strategies to reduce their water and energy usage. ESI members, including businesses and others, are required to institute a performance-based system to achieve their environmental goals

Handout 4 - Recycling and Materials Management

The Recycling and Materials Management Section (RAMMS) promotes recycling programs and helps expand recycling infrastructure. RAMMS works closely with Waste Reduction partners (WRP) to identify and implement waste reduction and recycling efforts by commercial, institutional and industrial generators providing critical material supply to manufacturers, reducing dependence on landfills and saving natural resources.

Handout 5 - Resource and Energy Efficiency

The Waste Reduction Partners (WRP) team helps organizations (Manufacturers, Businesses, Agriculture, Local governments, K-12 schools & institutions, Non-profits) to improve environmental and energy management through efficiency techniques that save money. The WRP team conducts on-site assessments and provides consulting services to businesses and public facilities throughout North Carolina. Consulting services are confidential and most are provided at no cost to the client. These services are supported through government and utility-sponsored grants

WRP team performs the following onsite assessments

  • Energy Efficiency
  • Water Use Efficiency
  • Soil Waste Reduction Assessments (Zero Waste)
  • Agricultural Plastics Recycling

Handout 6 - NCDEQ Regional Office Presence

Environmental Assistance Coordinators are closer to our customers in the department’s seven regional offices and can provide on-site consultation and coordinated permit reviews for proposed projects. Their primary responsibility is to assist businesses, industries, local governments, other institutions, consultants and residents as they seek to identify, understand and comply with the state’s environmental requirements.
