NCDEQ Taking Comments on Draft Coal Ash Rules Through March 22

The NC Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has announced three public meetings in February to gather comments on the draft state coal ash rules. The meetings will occur in Roxboro on Feb. 12, Dallas on Feb. 20, and Wilmington on Feb. 22.

Rules would add detailed criteria for how and where landfills are constructed and widen buffers with adjoining properties. These rules would include inspection requirements and public accessibility of inspection reports. A companion rule is being proposed to address dam safety at coal ash impoundments.

Interested members of the public may also comment in writing anytime through March 22. Send public comments by email to publiccomments@ncdenr.gov. When sending comments, include “CCR Rules” in the subject line.

DEQ will present a final draft to the full NC Environmental Management Commission (EMC) in May prior to a 60-day formal public comment period that is planned to bein this summer.
